You have found a design you love. Then you notice there is a printable invitation, a phone version and a website template. Which one do you actually need?

When comparing digital vs. paper invitations, it helps to go one step further: a still image, an animated video and a live website give your guests different experiences. “Digital invitation” can describe any of them, so the name alone does not tell you what is included.

This guide compares printable invitations, video invitation templates and invitation websites for birthdays, baby showers and other celebrations. Start with how you want guests to receive the details—and how you want them to reply.

The short answer

Choose a printable invitation for paper cards and keepsakes, a video invitation for movement, or an invitation website with RSVP features when you want guests to view the details and respond online.

Printable vs. video vs. website invitations at a glance

What matters to you? Printable invitation Video invitation Invitation website
What guests receive A printed card, or a still image if supplied/exported for sharing A video file, commonly MP4 A link to a published webpage
How you prepare it Edit, download and print Edit, preview and export the video Edit, publish and test the live site
Movement No movement in the printed card or still image Animation plays as a video Depends on the template’s design and features
RSVP method Usually a phone number, email or separate link Usually a reply or separate RSVP link sent with the video A form or linked RSVP option, if included
After changing details Reprint or resend the revised file Export and resend the revised video Republish changes; the same URL can remain usable if unchanged
Best reason to choose it A tangible card or simple invitation image A playful animated announcement Party information and clickable actions together

Features depend on the product. A phone-sized template is not automatically animated, and a website does not automatically include an RSVP form.

Option 01 · Something to hold and keep

Choose a printable invitation for a paper keepsake

A printable invitation template lets you personalize the wording, download the finished design and print it at home or through a print shop. It is a good fit when you enjoy handing out cards, posting invitations to relatives or saving a copy in a memory box.

Our Vintage Circus First Birthday Invitation is an editable 5 × 7 Canva template. Its red circus lettering, elephant and powder-blue border introduce the theme before the party begins. You can print it for guests and keep an extra copy with your child’s first birthday memories.

Can I send a printable invitation digitally?

You can share a suitable image export digitally when that option is supported by your template. The guest receives a still image rather than a live website. For printing, use the print-size version and appropriate print export rather than a screenshot of the design.

What to consider before choosing paper

  • Allow for paper, envelopes, ink or print-shop costs, plus postage if mailing.
  • Print one test before preparing the full batch.
  • Make the RSVP method clear: a phone number or email can be enough for a small party.
  • Remember that a printed card will not update if your venue or time changes.

If you mainly want a beautiful invitation and are comfortable collecting replies yourself, this can be all you need.

Option 02 · A little movement

Choose a video invitation for an animated announcement

An animated birthday invitation is a short video that reveals your party details with movement. Depending on the template, illustrations might float into place or text might appear in sequence. Music is not necessarily included, so check the listing if that matters to you.

With an editable Canva video invitation template, you personalize the available fields, preview the timing and download an MP4 file to share through a compatible messaging or email service. Check the service’s file-size limits and send yourself a test first.

Video invitation vs. invitation website: the important difference

A video plays. A website can be interacted with. A button drawn inside an MP4 is not a clickable RSVP form, and a video does not collect guest responses on its own.

If you choose a video invitation, include a short message beside it with the date, time and a clear way to reply. That also gives guests somewhere to check the essentials without replaying the animation.

A simple message to send with your video
“We’d love to celebrate with you! The party is on [date] at [time], at [venue]. Please reply by [RSVP date] and let us know how many adults and children will be coming.”

Choose this format when you love the animated reveal and do not mind managing responses separately. Make sure guests have enough time to read the details, and keep essential information understandable without sound.

Option 03 · One place for the details

Choose an invitation website with RSVP features for online planning

An invitation website is a webpage your guests open from a link. It can provide room for the event details and clickable actions, such as directions or an RSVP form, depending on the template you buy.

The Vintage Circus First Birthday Website Invitation includes an interactive envelope, party information, clickable links and built-in RSVP tracking. You personalize the Canva template, publish the website and share the live invitation link.

Who is a birthday invitation website useful for?

Consider it when you want guests to revisit the party information, follow links and respond through the included RSVP setup. A website can be helpful when the details feel crowded on a single card.

If you prefer strawberries and pink gingham, the Berry First Birthday Website Invitation offers another theme for the same kind of online invitation experience. Choose the design you love, then review the listing and demo for its exact features.

What to check before sending your invitation link

  • Open the published site on your phone as a guest would.
  • Check names, dates, addresses and every clickable link.
  • Submit a test RSVP and confirm you know where to find the response.
  • Share the published guest link, not your editable Canva template link.
  • After making changes, republish and check the live version.

An RSVP feature still needs you to review the responses and follow up when necessary. Read our guide to tracking kids’ birthday party RSVPs for more planning ideas.

Which invitation format is best for your celebration?

“I want something for the memory box.”

Start with a printable invitation. You can save a copy even if you share the details digitally with most guests.

“I want a fun invitation to send by message.”

Choose a video if animation is the main appeal. If you simply want an easy-to-read image, a still digital invitation may be enough.

“I want the details and RSVP in one place.”

Look for an invitation website that explicitly includes the RSVP features you need, then test them before sharing.

“Some relatives prefer a paper card.”

You can combine formats: print a few invitations and share a website with other guests. Use the same party information and one clearly explained RSVP method.

Compare the whole cost, not just the template price

For paper invitations, include printing, envelopes and any postage. For a digital option, check the template’s editing requirements and whether your intended features need a paid service. Count the time you will spend preparing the invitation and organizing replies, too.

There is no need to buy every format. Choose the one that solves your main problem, and add a second only if it serves a purpose.

Questions about printable and digital invitations

Is a digital invitation the same as a video invitation?

No. “Digital invitation” is a broad term. It can mean a still image, a PDF, a video or a website. Look for the delivery format in the product description.

Can a video invitation track RSVPs?

An MP4 file does not track replies itself. You can send a separate RSVP link alongside it, or ask guests to reply directly to you.

Does a Canva invitation website include a printed card?

Only if the listing explicitly includes one. The circus printable invitation and circus website invitation linked in this guide are separate products.

Can I change the details after sending an invitation?

For a printed card or downloaded video, you need to send a correction or revised version. For a website, edit and republish the page. If the published URL stays the same, guests can revisit it; still notify them directly about important changes.

Do guests need my Canva editing link?

No. Send a finished image, video or the published website link. Keep your template editing link for preparing the design.

Which is better for a first birthday: paper or digital invitations?

Paper is useful for a keepsake and guests who prefer a physical card. A video adds movement, while a website can provide clickable details and an RSVP experience. Your guest list and preferred way of organizing replies matter more than the theme.
